The Varna Regional Library aspires to create a place, rather than a building. The proposalβs main objective is balance. A balance between vibrant open public spaces and inviting intimate atmosphere for book lovers; between integration in the context and being an attractive landmark; between a contemporary interpretation of the libraryβs purpose and a tribute to books. Ergo, the suggested design. Despite the building being introverted, it is immediately connected to the environment through an inner courtyard, opening to a vast adjacent plaza (preserving a number of trees in the process). While the structureβs volume and situation correspond to the surroundings, its translucent materiality and dynamic entrance deliver a strong contemporary architectural statement. The rational composition and arrangement of bookshelves is the main organizational component of the functional program. Yet, the open floor plan and variety of seating and spaces present plenty of possibilities for flexibility.
